Booked a flight to Sydney? Before you arrange your airport transfer, check the three-letter airport code on your ticket.
SYD means Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport at Mascot. WSI means Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport in Western Sydney. They are separate airports in different locations.
It’s an easy detail to overlook, especially when you’re comparing flights, organising accommodation and booking transport for the whole family. But “Sydney Airport” on its own is no longer enough information to plan every journey.
Here’s what to check before travel day.
What’s the difference between Sydney Airport and Western Sydney Airport?
Sydney Airport is the established airport at Mascot, near Botany Bay. You may also hear it called Kingsford Smith Airport or simply Mascot Airport.
Western Sydney International is the new airport in the Badgerys Creek area. Its full name is Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport, and its passenger opening is scheduled for 25 October 2026.

Western Sydney International or WSI
The most useful detail is the airport code. Names can be shortened on booking websites or in messages, but checking SYD or WSI helps remove the guesswork.
How to check which airport you’ve booked
Open your airline confirmation or the airline’s app and look at the departure and arrival details for each flight.
You’re looking for:
- The full airport name.
- The three-letter airport code.
- Your travel date and flight number.
- The terminal, if it has been confirmed.
Check the actual itinerary rather than relying on the city name shown in a search result.
For example, a booking showing Melbourne to Sydney — SYD requires a pickup from Sydney Airport at Mascot. If it shows Melbourne to Western Sydney — WSI, your transfer needs to be arranged for Western Sydney International.
Also check your return flight separately. Don’t assume you’re flying home from the same airport you arrived at.
Is Western Sydney Airport another terminal at Sydney Airport?
No. Western Sydney International is a separate airport.
Sydney Airport’s T1, T2 and T3 are part of the Mascot airport. Travelling between those terminals is different from travelling between SYD and WSI.
This matters if you’re booking connecting flights yourself. An arrival at SYD followed by a departure from WSI involves a journey between airports, as well as any baggage collection and check-in requirements.
Before paying for the flights, check the connection with your airline or travel agent. A gap that looks comfortable on a booking screen may be much tighter once you include everything that happens between landing and boarding again.
Which airport is better for your Sydney trip?
That depends on where you’re staying, which flights are available and what the whole journey will cost.
Start with your accommodation address. Someone staying in central Sydney may have different transport needs from a family visiting relatives in Western Sydney.
When comparing flights, consider:
- The fare for everyone travelling.
- Checked baggage and other airline charges.
- The transfer quote to your exact destination.
- Arrival and departure times.
- Passenger numbers, suitcases and child-seat requirements.
A lower airfare can still be a good deal, but compare the complete trip before deciding. If you’re travelling with a group, get a transport quote for each airport using the same passenger and luggage details.
Booking your airport transfer: what to send us
When booking with TipTop Maxi Sydney, please provide the airport name or code along with your flight details.
A useful booking message looks like this:
Airport: Sydney Airport — SYD
Flight number: Your airline flight number
Arrival date and time: As shown on your itinerary
Destination: Full hotel or residential address
Passengers: Number of adults and children
Luggage: Number of large suitcases and smaller bags
Additional requirements: Child seats, wheelchair access or oversized items
For a WSI booking, replace the airport line with Western Sydney International — WSI.
If you’re unsure, send us the flight details from your confirmation. You can hide your booking reference, payment information and any other personal details we don’t need.
For family and group bookings, please include the luggage count from the start. Passenger numbers alone don’t tell us how much space your group needs.
You can view our Sydney Airport transfer service or contact us on WhatsApp to discuss your journey.
What if you’ve booked transport to the wrong airport?
Contact your transport provider as soon as you notice.
Give them the correct airport, flight number, travel date and pickup address. Ask them to confirm the revised pickup time, availability and fare.
Changing from SYD to WSI, or the other way around, changes the journey. The original quote and pickup time may no longer apply.
If you’ve already arrived at the wrong airport, contact your airline as well. They can advise you about your flight and available options. Avoid setting off for the other airport on the assumption that you’ll still make check-in.
A quick check before travel day
The night before your journey, take a minute to compare your flight confirmation with your transport booking.
Do the airport code, travel date and flight details match?
For a departure, check that your pickup time has been planned around the airline’s check-in requirements. For an arrival, make sure your transport provider has the correct flight number and destination.
If someone else booked the flight for you, ask them to forward the itinerary. “The international airport” or “the Sydney airport” can leave room for confusion.
Frequently asked questions
Is SYD the same airport as WSI?
No. SYD is Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport at Mascot. WSI is Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport in Western Sydney.
Does “international” always mean Sydney Airport Terminal 1?
No. T1 is Sydney Airport’s international terminal, but Western Sydney International is a different airport. Check the airport code before selecting your pickup or drop-off location.
Can my arrival and return flights use different Sydney airports?
Yes, that is possible. Check every flight on your itinerary and book each transfer against the airport shown for that flight.
How long should I allow to travel between SYD and WSI?
There isn’t one reliable time allowance for every connection. Road conditions, baggage collection, border processing where applicable and the next airline’s check-in deadline all affect the plan. Confirm the connection requirements with your airline before arranging transport.
What if I can’t find the airport code?
Open the full itinerary in your airline’s app or confirmation email. If it is still unclear, ask the airline or travel agent to confirm the airport before booking your transfer.
